The Northern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® Encourages Members to Watch the Movie “Hidden Figures”
DETROIT, MI – The leadership of the Northern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. ®, which is comprised of the states of Michigan, Northwest Ohio and Western New York, encourages its members to watch the highly acclaimed film, “Hidden Figures” with their loved ones during the month of January. It is imperative to support such a movie, one that empowers our women, celebrates our history and provides a great example for our youth on the big screen.
“Hidden Figures” is an incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) – all brilliant African-American women working at NASA. These three women served as masterminds behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Their stunning achievement helped restore the nation’s confidence, push the United States to the forefront of space travel and galvanized the world in historic proportions. The trio shattered gender and race barriers to inspire following generations to dream big. It is also noteworthy that all three women are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
“We want to encourage our Brothers, either collectively or individually to have daddy-daughter dates with their daughters, nieces or other significant young women in their lives to view this movie as a way of teaching our young women, that African-American women have played a significant role in American history,” Province Polemarch Kevin D. Kyles said. “It is important that our young women know that men appreciate their contribution and celebrate it.”
Brothers will be asked to commemorate the daddy-daughter date by taking photographs and joining the conversation and showing support on social media by using the hashtags #HiddenFigures, #Kapsi1911 and #NP2017DDD.
The movie “Hidden Figures” premiers on January 6, 2017 nationwide.
