On September 24, 2016 the Southfield (MI) Alumni Chapter held the annual D.A.P.S. (Detroit, Ann Arbor, Pontiac and Southfield) Chapters’ Softball Slugfest at Inglenook Park in Southfield, MI. The Slugfest was started several years ago by Southfield Alumni Brother Darryl Dixon a 1980 initiate of the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Dixon envisioned an event to bring Kappa Men together for a day of fun and competition. The actual softball competition has always been secondary to the fellowship and brotherhood aspects of the event. Brother Pharoah Kirk, a 2014 initiate of the Southfield Alumni Chapter, now leads the annual event.
Approximately 50 Brothers attended the event representing all chapters in the Metropolitan Detroit Area. Province Polemarch Kevin D. Kyles, 22nd Province Polemarch Harry G. Franklin and Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti-Inkster (MI) Alumni Polemarch Tadarial Sturdivant were some of the Province and local leadership in attendance. Southfield Alumni Polemarch Brother Keith Way kicked off the event by welcoming all Brothers and Southfield Alumni Brother Langston Jones led the group in prayer. Brothers circled up to sing the Kappa Hymn and then the fellowship and competition began.
This year there were only two teams competing in a best 2 out 3 games. Southfield Alumni fielded a team and there was a combined team of members from Detroit, Ann Arbor and Pontiac Alumni Chapters. In the end, Southfield Alumni’s sluggers and fast-young legs were too much for the combined team. Southfield Alumni won the first game 18 – 6 and the second game 13-6. Everyone had a great time and all look forward to the 2017 Slugfest!
